Funding provided by the Nebraska Academy of Sciences’ Public Information and Education (PIE) grant allowed NRC to bring Sarah Pierpont, executive director of the New Mexico Recycling Coalition and nationally recognized expert on hub and spoke recycling systems, to Nebraska in June. Ms. Pierpont conducted workshops in Lincoln and Norfolk on the operation and benefits of establishing a “Hub and Spoke” recycling system in rural areas of Nebraska. The target audience was elected officials, city administrators, service providers and other recycling stakeholders.

The first meeting was held on June 20th at the City Council Chambers in Norfolk and attended by 34 stakeholders from Norfolk and surrounding communities. A printed report was distributed that contained data and recommendations based on research conducted by the Nebraska Recycling Council and analysis by Ms. Pierpont. The second hub and spoke presentation was delivered at the League of Nebraska Municipalities’ Municipal Accounting and Finance Conference on June 21st. This meeting was attended by 37 people from a broad swath of Nebraska communities.

Copies of Sarah Pierpont’s presentation slides and of the Northeast Nebraska Hub and Spoke report can be found on the NRC web site at:
