Disability Pride Month is celebrated every July because it marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was landmark legislation that protects people with disabilities from discrimination.

We encourage our members and followers to consider how they can be an ally to people with disabilities in their community by educating yourselves, advocating for inclusivity in your recycling programming and ensuring your content is accessible to everyone.

Since 2021, we have been working to understand the experiences of people with disabilities related to recycling and waste management. We have learned that durable medical equipment can be difficult for people to obtain and handle the proper disposal of. In addition, agencies that provide assistance to the disability community have limited storage space to house large donated equipment.

In response to this, we applied for Nebraska Environmental Trust grant funding to host four durable medical equipment collection/recycling and rehome events in 2024 and 2025.Two events will be this summer in Lincoln and Scottsbluff, and Lincoln’s rehome event will be held on Saturday July 27 at the Disability Pride Event at Antelope Park.

To increase access to these events, we are offering FREE equipment moving assistance for both the Lincoln and Scottsbluff events. However, this assistance is limited! You only need to submit a form, outlining what equipment they have to donate and where it is located.
